This framed photograph features the relatives of the prominent Peranakan Tan Kim Tian. The men are attired in Western business dress while their female counterparts wear a variety of baju banjang, lace kebayas and baju shanghai. Holding the central position in the photograph is the matriarch. The family portrait was taken at Tan Kim Tian’s residence, Botan House. Tan Kim Tian established Tan Kim Tian and Company in 1849, the first local company to build ships of its own. He was the also the first president of Po Chek Kiong- temple, assembly hall and school of the Tan clan.
