Traditionally, a young girl in Lampung was expected to embroider a set of garments, including a skirt like this one, for her wedding day. Using silk, gold wrapped thread and small sections of mica, she would laboriously work to complete this task in her free time, reputedly taking as much as two years to finish. The completion of a wedding ensemble was in fact symbolically taken to indicate that a girl was ready for marriage. Indeed, if a young man asked if the tapis was finished, he was asking if she would agree to marry him.
