This photograph features a Peranakan Chinese bridal couple in front of their home and in front of the deity altar. The bride poses formally with her hands within the elaborate embroidered sleeves. The groom wears Manchu style clothes with an elaborately beaded collar and carries a paper fan. The deity altar represents the significance of the presence of the divine in witnessing a marriage union. As such, many Peranakan wedding photos are commonly taken in front of the diety altar or/and the front door. The photo was taken by the Season Studio located at Jalan Besar, Singapore. This photo is part of a large group of framed photographs which provides important visual documentation of the fashion, studio photography and lifestyle of Peranakans of the Straits Settlements and Indonesia in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries. Studio photography possibly reached Singapore and the region in the mid 1800s, and Peranakans were among the earliest clients.
