Ho Ho Ying is a reputable abstract artist in Singapore who has been painting since the 1950s. He is a founding member of the Modern Art Society, which he led from 1964 to 1970s. In 2012, Ho was awarded the Singapore Cultural Medallion, in recognition of his artistic achievements and contributions to the local art scene.Ho Ho Ying first encountered the visual arts through Chinese calligraphy in 1940s, and he continued to develop calligraphic forms as the core of his abstract style throughout his career. ‘Untitled’ is an early work by the artist created in 1964, the founding year of the Modern Art Society. This painting shows the artist’s early experimentation in bridging Western formalist abstraction with the Chinese calligraphic structures. The work is a good example of the artist’s abstract style which focuses on the aesthetic and philosophic dialogues between the East and the West.
