This print of scenes of Japan reproduces a page from the Atlas Historique by the French mapmaker and publisher Henri Abraham Chatelain. A title at the top, “Vue et description de la ville de Meaco capitale du Japon avec d'autres particularitez du pays”, describes the contents. Five views and one plan surrounding a central panel of text, which describes Kyoto and Tokyo. The five views show: Meaco (Kyoto), Saccai (Sakai), scenes of Christians being tortured, a Japanese wedding ceremony, and a temple in Sakai, and the plan is of Dejima trading island.
