This Japanese Arita ware dish replicates the style of Chinese Kraak ware. The underglaze blue painted design comprises a landscape with long-tailed birds amongst of flowering peonies, surrounded by panels of flowers and precious objects around the rim. Amongst the first Chinese export ware to be made for the West, Kraak wares were made in large quantities at Jingdezhen, and exported from about 1575 to about 1644. By the 17th century, Japanese craftsmen emulated popular Chinese styles of porcelain in order to compete for a share of foreign markets.
