This calculating machine belonged to a quantity surveyor who worked in his father's company, Hiap Teck Tong Kee Contractor, from 1952 to the 1970s. The device was brought for about S$800 during the 1960s. Hiap Tck Tong Kee Contractor was responsible for the building of a number of public housing under first the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) and later the Housing and Development Board (HDB). Projects undertaken by the company included Rocher House and Selegie House in the 1950s, as well as the emergency flats following the Bukit Ho Swee fire in 1961.
