Jane Lee (b 1963) is one of Singapore's most accomplished contemporary painters. A former fashion designer, her desire to break out of the cyclical trends of fashion led her to pursue a degree in Fine Arts at LASALLE. Her works explore the limits of painting and their form as objects, often by incorporating quotidian methods or domestic processes in their manufacture. Her Fetish Series paintings can be considered "Handmade Paintings", insofar as they were made by making a skin of paint on a sheet of glass, cutting it into long strips, then rolling them into tight spirals that would then be embedded in the paint surface. The apparently solid surface colours as indicated by their titles are betrayed by the shades of different colours that are revealed randomly in the layers, as if fetishes that tell of the wishes that are repressed through repetition.
