A Crucifix

This Crucifix is one of the rare few examples which clearly show the distinctive characteristics of Japanese ivory art such as the exaggerated spheroid forehead, fine eye slits, wide elongated and flat nose with well defined nostrils, and hair marked with incisions and waved. Furthermore, the treatment of the form, with deep cuts emphasising detailed folds on the loincloth and swollen hands and feet best illustrate the exaggerated forms of Japanese Christian art.
