With the coming of the Colonial powers, a unique school of painting developed in India. Commissioned by European officers, they were executed by native artists. Trade studies were an intensely popular theme in Company school paintings. This set of trade studies has been stylistically identified with the Delhi School of Company period paintings. The paintings are very fine and are distinguished by the Urdu markings they bear.Members of different trading communities migrated to Singapore-Malaya from India. This set of trade studies serves as an illustrated reference to the professional and socio-cultural background of the Indian community in Singapore.
