From 1871, Frank Vincent, a young American traveller, visited Southeast Asia, starting from Burma and proceeding to Penang, Melaka and Singapore, and eventually to Thailand and Cambodia, as documented in this travel book. One chapter is devoted to Melaka and Singapore, in which Vincent describes his visits to Fort Canning, Thian Hock Keng Temple, Telok Ayer Market, Whampoa's Garden, and driving through Orchard Road and River Valley Road.
