These lantern covers feature colours and Chinese motifs that were popular with Peranakans at the turn of the century. The central motifs of these covers include auspicious animals like the deer (for rank and wealth) and qilins (for fertility and good fortune).Lanterns which were adorned with lantern covers, such as these, came in fours and were paraded by four Pak Boyan (Baweanese men) during wedding procession of the traditional 12-day Peranakan wedding. They serve mainly decorative purposes rather than functional.
