This cotton tape (also known as sazigyo) was woven on a long, narrow loom used for tablet weaving. The text is a Buddhist verse. Binding tapes were traditionally woven by women as gifts for their sons during their novitiation into the monastery. This was also a way for women to make merit. Tapes were also commissioned by donors, whose names and date of donation are sometimes included in the text. This weaving tradition originates from at least the 18th century and was practiced until the 1970s.
