This bowl or 'pala' has a combination of repousse and chased decoration. The walls are decorated with several different scenes some of which were taken from the 'Vidh-Ra Jattaka', where Buddha is born as a wise Prime Minister. The Ogre tricks the King into a game of dice by offering the King a precious ruby if he wins the game. The King loses and he has to hand over his Prime Minister to the Ogre who ties him up and pulls him away on horseback. The band below the rim is decorated with the unusual motif of ogre faces.Silver known as 'baw', was traditionally mined from the northern Shan states. However during the colonial period, coins were more often melted down to make silver objects. This elaborate decorative style is typical of a ceremonial bowl made for ritual use for example for making offerings at the temple.
