Altar cloths were used by Peranakans to decorate the front end of altar tables during special occasions and were hung vertically. They usually depict Chinese auspicious motifs such as the deities of the Hock Lock Siew or the Eight Immortals. Fully gold thread altar cloths, such as this, are rare and may have been commissioned pieces.
