Born in 1978 in Malaysia, Shahrul Jamili Miskon was first trained as ceramicist in Central Academy of Arts, Kuala Lumpur and later went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Surrey Institute of Arts, UK in 2003. Shahrul is amongst a new breed of young, foreign-educated artists to have come on the Malaysian contemporary arts scene in recent times.‘Making Sense Can Sometimes Get Out of Hand’ came about as a result of Shahrul’s contemplation over trying to make art that is at once utilitarian and meaningful for both artist and society. Turning to hand signs used by the deaf, he mimics this silent yet empowering method of communication to produce a witty installation of 35 hand sign letters that reads ‘making sense can sometimes get out of hand’.
