This pair of carved, wooden pulleys is finished in lacquer and decorated with fine motifs created by mother-of-pearl inlay.Pairs of pulleys were suspended from the loom beams, to hold up the heddles and to control the tension.Beautifully carved pulleys were made by husbands for their new brides. The high quality of workmanship on this pair seem to suggest that they were used by a weaver for the royal court or for a rich client. Weaving tools like this pair with mother-of-pearl inlay work are rare.
