This porcelain spoon carries the reign mark ‘Guangxu nian zhi’, suggesting it was made during the reign of Manchu Emperor Guangxu from 1875 to 1908. The designs of a peony flower and some of the eight auspicious Buddhist emblems could have been painted using polychrome enamels. Peonies are auspicious symbols that symbolise spring, love, beauty and good fortune. Peranakan Chinese spoons were usually smaller, more graceful and delicate than those used by other Chinese to eat food.
