This silver globular teapot could have been part of a wedding tea set used in traditional Peranakan Chinese wedding ceremonies. It is decorated with auspicious Chinese motifs favoured by the Peranakans, such as bird and floral motifs. A typical wedding tea set would consist of two globular teapots, a tea tray and four teacups. Tea sets were used for certain rites in the traditional 12-day Peranakan wedding, such as its use on the ‘spring table’ of the wedding chamber where the bride and the groom would toast themselves. Silver tea sets were rare and they were usually commissioned by wealthy Peranakan families.
