This photograph shows a replica of the Angkor Wat temple showcased at the Cambodian Pavilion during the 1931 Exposition Colonial de Paris. Cambodia, along with present-day Laos and Vietnam, was part of the French colony of Indochina from 1887 to 1954. The Exposition was an international exhibition held in Paris over a period of six months. It saw the participation of various colonial powers such as Britain, Portugal and the United States of America. Most exhibition pavilions showcased native architecture from various Asian and African colonies, as well as efforts by the colonialists to improve the lives of the colonised peoples, in an attempt to justify and glorify the notion of colonialism. As such, displays of agricultural production and a wide variety of statistics, as well as the history of Indochina were exhibited at the Cambodian Pavilion. This photograph is part of an album on the Exposition, and is a presentation copy signed by the official exhibition photographer, Marcel Braun.
