This folio contains a rare and extensive photographic survey of the Javanese-Hindu complex, Candi Prambanan (also known as Candi Lara Jonggrang). Built in the 9th century, the site is located on the Prambanan Plains, which are about 20 kilometres east of Jogjakarta. Dr. Isaac Groneman was a Dutch medical doctor who wrote many books on Javanese history and culture. He was also the Honorary President of the Archaelogical Society at Jogjakarta at the time when the society undertook the excavation of the Prambanan temples from 1889 to 1890. Dr. Groneman was assisted in his research by the pioneer Indonesian photographer, Kassian Cephas, who was also a court photographer of the Jogjakarta Sultanate.
