Carmageddon

Born in Singapore, Chun Kai Qun (b. 1982) received his diploma from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. An active participant in the art scene, Chun was an artist assistant to Federico Herrero (2006) and Tang Ling Nah (2008) for the Singapore Biennale, and Tang Da Wu (2007) and Ming Wong (2009) for the Venice Biennale. Since 2005, he has participated in exhibitions, in both solo and groups shows. Chun is also the recipient of multiple awards, such as Merit Award of the 3rd CDL Sculpture Award and Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship (2005-2007). Chun’s works explore the theme of childhood, play, growing up and living in a contemporary society, often drawing inspiration from computer games and other online sources. This installation consists of a diorama of an abandoned construction site and a series of stereo-photographs of the site. The abandoned site is transformed into a stunt-driving course, littered with crashes and wreckage. Chun wishes to express the idea of play and wildness in an urban landscape, an inspiration from the idea of artists occupying and bringing a new lease of life to underutilized spaces.
