Born in Indonesia, Angki Purbandono (b. 1971) is one of the founders of Ruang Mes 56, a non-profit photography institution in Indonesia dedicated to the development of discourse in contemporary photography. He was in Yogyakarta Art Institute from 1994 to 1999, majoring in photography, arts and media recording. In 2005, Angki received the Asian Artist Fellowship at Changdong Art Studio in Seoul, South Korea. He has exhibited widely in Asia as well as Europe, and most recently, at the 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (2009). Creating his art with a flatbed scanner, Angki captures the textures and colours of his subjects at close proximity to reveal details that would otherwise have been missed by the naked eye. He juxtaposes everyday objects in unexpected combinations to engage his audience by evoking a spirit of playfulness and nostalgia.
