This unique finely carved green agate seal is the royal seal of Wajid 'Ali Shah the King of Oudh, marking his royal accession to the throne of Oudh (modern day Uttar Pradesh, India). The front surface is inscribed with four lines of elegant nasta’liq script set amidst floral sprigs and leaves:“Abu’l-Mansur Nasir al-Din Sikandar Shah, the Just King, the Caesar of the time, the Sultan of the World, Muhammad Wajid ‘Ali Shah, the King of Oudh (Awadh), May God make his kingdom eternal. AH 1263 / 1846-47 CE”.It is thought this seal may have been worn or carried by Wajid ‘Ali Shah at all times on his waistband or belt.
