The St. Andrew’s Cathedral

This is a photo showing the second St. Andrew’s Cathedral building. The original St. Andrew’s Church, designed by George D. Coleman in his trademark neo-Palladian style was completed in 1836 but was demolished later as it was struck by lightning twice and was unsafe. The new cathedral was designed by Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald Macpherson, who was the Executive Engineer and Superintendent of Convicts in Singapore from 1855 to 1857. Construction of the building was carried out by a crew of Indian convicts and completed under the supervision of Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair. The Church held its first service on 1 October 1861 and was consecrated in 1862. It was gazetted as a national monument in 1973.
