This postcard shows the Singapore Town Hall and Government House decked out in lights to honour the visit by Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) in 1922. During his two-day stay in Singapore, the prince participated in various activities at both locations. This visit to Singapore was part of an eight-month Eastern tour the prince took from 1921 to 1922, during which he also called on India, Malaya, Hong Kong and Japan. This postcard is part of a set of 38 detailing this visit. The tour was one of the most important diplomatic voyages that Prince Edward made on behalf of the British monarchy. It enabled a comprehensive survey of the social and political situation in various parts of Asia that had close links with the British Empire. A total of 16 such Empire tours were made by the prince between 1919 and 1935. He left for Hong Kong on the battle cruiser H.M.S. Renown after spending two days in Singapore.
