The bridge was officially opened on 17 August 1956 by the then Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock. The name ‘Merdeka’ means freedom in Malay and it symbolised the people’s desire for independence. The bridge featured two lion statues sculpted by Rodolfo Nolli. The statues now reside at SAFTI Military Institute in Tuas.
