The Barisan Sosialis (Socialist Front) was a political party formed in 1961 by the former left-wing members of the People’s Action Party (PAP). Barisan was led by Lee Siew Choh and Lim Chin Siong, and was the main opposition party in self-governing Singapore. In the 1963 General Elections, the party won 13 of the 51 seats contested. In the 1965 by-elections, the PAP had a decisive win over Barisan. The party boycotted the 1968 elections, only to contest in the 1972 elections with no success. Barisan Sosialis eventually dissolved in 1988.
