View of Coleman Bridge and New Bridge Road

This picture was taken from the north bank of the Singapore River at the point where Coleman Bridge (foreground) linked Hill Street with New Bridge Road on the south bank. The original Coleman Bridge was erected in 1840, with subsequent replacement structures built in 1865, 1888 and 1990. The HDB housing complex (centre) on the south bank was constructed on the site where the Ellenborough market once stood before it was destroyed by a fire in the 1970s. In the distance stood the People’s Park Complex (left background) and the People’s Park Centre (centre background), completed in 1973 and 1976 respectively. Both projects were part of the urban renewal scheme for the old city centre.
