Converted from a section of the disused Kallang Airport, the Kallang Park opened to much fanfare on 19 October 1959. The idea for the park was mooted by former Minister for National Development, Mr. Ong Eng Guan, who wanted to turn vacant land in the city area to recreational spaces. Informally called the “Operation Lung” project, the construction of the park was carried out jointly by workers from the City Council and Public Works Department, as well as a team of about 5,000 volunteers. The park had a children’s pool, a lily pond and hawker stalls. It was also a popular venue for fairs and expos.
