The building with stepped terraces in the background was the Woh Hup Complex (right centre), completed in 1973 as part of the Housing Development Board’s urban renewal project to turn the Beach Road area into a ‘Golden Mile’ of luxury skyscrapers. Later renamed as the Golden Mile Complex, the residential, office and shopping complex became a popular meeting point for expat Thais working in Singapore. Next to the Complex stood the Golden Mile Tower (left centre), another building built around the same time as part of the renewal project. Developed by Chong Gay Theatres, the Tower was designed to house apartments, offices, shops, and a cinema-cum-theatre.
