This photo shows two rickshaw (or jinrikisha) pullers. It was probably taken by an officer of the Royal Navy’s HMS Sussex which was passing through Calcutta, Ceylon and Batavia on its way to Singapore during the Second World War. The rickshaw, a small carriage pulled by a man, was a popular mode of transport in most parts of South and Southeast Asia from the 1880s and continued to be used in the initial period after the Second World War.
