This silver Qur'anic amulet container is decorated with a central keyhole window surrounded by floral and foliate motifs done in repoussé. The edges are fringed with nine chain strands of coral beads terminating in silver coins. This amuletic container was worn for protective reasons and was probably used to hold either a miniature Qur’an or a piece of paper with a Qur’anic verse. For Muslims, the Qur'an is the visual embodiment of the Word of God and is considered sacred. This particular container highlights the protective powers of the Qur’an to Muslims. The protective powers of the Qur’an can also manifest itself in talismanic shirts and caps.
