This piece was probably moulded and finished with hand-carved and applied details. The underglaze blue painting includes both the outlines of the costume e.g. the folds of the robe, as well as the decorative motifs. The clothing on this piece is thought to be of Mongol origin. The crawling of the white glaze and the fusing of the cobalt blue were firing faults, suggesting that perhaps this type of ceramic ware was not regularly produced. It is possible that figures were made as special commissions, as only one or two other known similar examples exist.
