This is the last will and testament of Enchi’ Kechi’ binte Shamsur(?), outlining her properties that included a plot of land at Albert Street with the grant number 296 and four plots of land at [unclear, but ends with -ling] with the grant numbers 287, 288, 305 and 306; as well as branded equipment (perkakas2), and other personal belongings that she has temporarily placed in several houses. She requested that donations to be made in her name after her passing ($50 in Singapore) and the remainder to be willed to her two daughters as per the sharia division of inheritance.Document is dated at the top: Di Singapura kepada 19 haribulan Syawal 1293 sanad tahun Masehi 1876.In terms of penmanship, this will has one of the clearest/cleanest writings. It is also significant that while the attorney is male (Shaykh Abdurrahman [?] Yahya al-Mursi), the tone in the will is very clearly that of Enchi’ Kechi’.This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
