This exquisite little piece illustrates that size was no obstacle to the Dehua potters’ aptitude for naturalistic expression and fine detail. The relaxed mood of the intoxicated scholar is apparent in the way he leans indifferently against the precariously tilted wine jar, with flowing drapery and drooping sleeves. The finely incised details of the rank badge are just visible on the front of the robe.Dehua, located on the southeast coast of Fujian province, is well known for its production of white porcelain, known to Europeans as 'blanc de Chine'. The earliest Dehua porcelain was produced as early as the 14th century but the production and quality of these porcelain peaked around the 17th and 18th centuries.
