The elephant monument presented by the King of Thailand

This postcard depicts the monument of a bronze elephant that was a gift from King Chulalongkorn, or Rama V of Siam (Thailand) to Singapore. It was an expression of the king’s gratitude for the hospitality extended to him during his visit to Singapore in 1871. Initially placed in front of Victoria Memorial Hall, as seen in this postcard, the bronze elephant was moved to the front of Parliament House in 1919 to make way for the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles.
