The groups of people depicted on this page are clockwise from left: "Cake Sellers from Madras"; "Hindoo Money-lender from Madras" (Chettiar); "Madras Beggar-woman and Children"; "Performing Monkeys" and "Chinese Sugar-cane Seller with Coolie Customer". This page of sketches is an example of the increasingly popular depiction of locals in illustrations and portraiture which catered to European customers in the late 19th century. In such illustrations, locals were often given distinctive marks of ethnicity or occupation and arranged in multi-views.
