The original St Andrew’s Cathedral was built in 1837 but it was closed and demolished a few years later due to lightning damage. A new church was built and it opened for service on 1 October 1861. It was built in early English Gothic style. The Cathedral’s nave was used as a casualty station during the Japanese Occupation.
