Erected in 1887, the Raffles Library and Museum - administered as a combined institution until 1955 - was the predecessor to the National Museum of Singapore today. The museum was officially opened by then Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld, and its purpose was to collect objects of historical and archeological value, mainly from the Eastern Archipelago region but in particular from Singapore.
