This rare and unique cloth is known as a ‘kain titian’ or 'bridge cloth'. It was woven separately in two parts and was made by joining two panels, one woven by the bride's family and the other by the groom's. Joining the two was symbolic of the union of the couple. The cloth was used as part of the traditional Minangkabau wedding ceremony. In this special ceremony the bride and groom walked towards each other along the cloth and met at the middle, again symbolising the union of the couple in marriage.
