Fur trimming found on wedding accessories and costumes of the Penang Peranakan Chinese was fashioned after the winter gowns of the Northern Manchu court. Such styles were adopted by the Penang Peranakan Chinese in support of their claim that they were the most “Chinese” among the Chinese Peranakans and it was also a reminder of their position as the northernmost of the Straits Chinese colonies (Malacca and Singapore).
