The Goddess Chamunda

Identified by the third eye on her forehead, this stele depicts a gruesome imagery of Chamunda. She is shown here as Durga in her fearsome form and is represented as an emaciated skeleton, nirmamsa kankali. In this stele, she is standing on a young boy accompanied by two male kankala (skeletal) figures. In this sculpture, Chamunda is ten- armed, carrying Durga and Shiva's attributes, mostly weapons. She slayed the demons Chanda and Munda and hence is called Chamunda.
