Villages were usually self-sufficient. A Malay village for example, would have its own water supply, place of worship, farm, school, cemetery and shops. The village provision shops sold basic necessities such as rice and flour, while others sold beverages and cooked food (similar to the present day coffee shop), which became a site of social interaction for the villagers.
