Built to cater to administrative needs and to facilitate civil services, the Municipal Building was completed in 1929 and housed various government bodies over the decades. It was the site where the Japanese surrendered to the British in 1945. The building was later renamed City Hall in 1951 and after undergoing a major facelift in 1987, it went on to host a range of government events.
