Karna displaying his prowess: a page from the Mahabharata

This painting depicts a page from the great epic of Mahabharata. The scene here shows the Sabha Parva of the great epic Mahabharata. It displays, within the four walls of a palace courtyard, the military prowess of the Pandava and Kaurava princes who have just completed their training with Dronacharya. Dhritarashtra along with Bhishma and Vidura sit in the central canopy while Kunti, widow of Pandu and mother of the five Pandava brothers sits to one side. The spatial arrangement is unique with people within the courtyard and outside especially in balconies, windows and terraces eager, anxious and displaying varied emotions. Sabha Parva is the second of the 18 chapters of the Mahabharata describing a game of dice played between the Pandavas and Kauravas
