View of Orchard Road Market

This is postcard of Orchard Road. Orchard Road got its name from nutmeg and pepper plantations and fruit orchards lining the street. The the tallest buildings at Orchard were only two-storeys high and the only vehicles around were horse-drawn carriages and rickshaws. However Orchard Road was the commercial district of Singapore then as it is now. Urbanization and redevelopment led to the construction of big companies like C. K. Tang and then Plaza Singapura. Today, Orchard Road bustles with activity from dawn to dusk with some shopping malls offering overnight shopping as well.
