Autographing on the Japanese flag was a rite of ritual for many relatives, friends and co-workers of the soldiers in the Imperial Japanese Army. The flag, which the soldier carried as a personal good luck charm, has not only names, but also slogans of encouragement on it, written in such a way that they appear like rays emanating from the sun. The common slogan above the sun says: “we pray for eternal good luck in war”.
