Page from a royal Mughal album

The borders on this opulent page are decorated with floral sprays outlined with a heavy line of gold. This treatment of the floral sprays is similar to the effect found on gem-set Mughal jade. Based on the painting of its borders, this leaf is believed to have come from an album belonging to the emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658).The 'nasta‘liq' script was appreciated by Muslim patrons from India especially during the Mughal period. Single-sheet calligraphy and paintings from various artists was collected and mounted into albums by connoisseurs. Mughal emperors were avid patrons and collectors of calligraphy and paintings. In order to maintain visual unity in the albums, the various pages were mounted with similar borders.
