Tiandihui initiation ceremony paraphernalia

Representing the five founders of the Hung Society and the provinces of the society's lodges, the flags of the five founders were placed on the altar during the Tiandihui initiation ceremony. The flag shown is the flag which represents the fourth lodge, the Consult Heaven Hall or ‘Cantiantang’. The Chinese characters found on the flag are ‘qi’ and ‘he’ which denote harmony. These five flags were part of the secret society paraphernalia found in the William Stirling Collection. William George Stirling was the Assistant Protector of Chinese in Singapore from 1921 to 1931.
